Different types of mudguards

There are mudguards that are permanently installed. This means that you can't just take them off when you don't need them. But on the other hand, no one else can just take them off either. So a spontaneous thief doesn't stand a chance.

If flexibility is important to you, i.e. being able to ride with and without mudguards, then clip-on mudguards are your best option. With these, you only need to mount the mounting device, and then you can simply slide your mudguard onto it when needed.

Mudguard sets for trekking bikes and fitness bikes

It makes sense to have or to mount mudguards, especially on trekking bikes, fitness bikes or  cross bikes. Whether you use it to ride to work every day or just for the occasional trip – you can always be caught out by rain. And without mudguards, you will immediately have completely soaked clothes. This should be avoided.

Of course, it is important that the mudguards fit your bike and tires. It depends on the tire size, for trekking and fitness bikes these are usually 28 inches, the tire width and the mounting method. So how the mudguards are mounted on the bike.

Most front wheel mudguards are attached to the fork crown with a screw. If a light is already mounted there, you may have to temporarily unscrew it to mount the mudguard.

The mudguard for the rear wheel is mounted in a similar way. It is also attached with a screw. In some cases, there are also additional stabilizing struts that are attached to the rear wheel strut or the rear wheel axle.

Mudguards for hardtail mountain bikes

Especially when mountain biking in spring or fall, when the ground can be wet and muddy, it makes sense to mount fenders.

With MTB hardtails, you need to make sure you have the correct size of mudguards. Do you have 26-inch, 27.5-inch or 29-inch tires? Then you need the appropriate mudguards. These mudguards are also easy to mount. Usually with just one screw. SKS even has mudguards with integrated battery-powered rear lights that are simply mounted on the seat tube.

For mountain bikes, there is another alternative to the normal mudguard for the front wheel : a so-called splash guard for the down tube. This is attached to the down tube with rubber bands as needed and keeps out coarse mud and dirt. This type of mudguard is also very suitable for protection against stone chippings.
