Women’s bicycle advice – What is there to consider?

We women have special demands and needs. We are happy about a wide range of products and when, after extensive, relaxed research, we can find exactly the bike with which we will be completely satisfied with certainty and a good gut feeling. The market offers the right model for almost every wish, including accessories, of course.

When we get on the saddle, we want to feel light and agile, optimally equipped and safe. Our bike should be a comfortable companion rather than just a means of transport. Therefore, a relieving seat for relaxed muscles and joints is essential.

The following types of bicycle come into question for us:

  • a city bike
  • a Dutch bicycle
  • a trekking bike
  • a lifestyle bike
  • a bicycle for overweight people

Good to know: All these variants are also available as ebike models.

As a relevant criterion for a decision, we would like to emphasise here how important the ratio between frame and tyre size is. In addition, every recommendable dealer also supplies safety-relevant accessories so that you are fully and optimally equipped. These include, for example, a roadworthy lighting system and reflectors.

Women’s bicycles are sometimes characterised by comprehensive equipment. Everything must be included so that we can move safely through traffic without being reprimanded by law enforcement officers.

If you are thinking about choosing a bike, take the following points into consideration, because the most important factors for a purchase without disappointment are:

  • Weight
  • Frame geometry
  • Practicality
  • suitable accessories
  • a comfortable entry

Think carefully beforehand about what your bike will be used for. And: Do you want a luggage rack? Or: Do you need full suspension or a motor?

Very inexpensive models usually get points deducted in terms of safety. For example, safety-relevant accessories such as reflectors are not included in the low-price package. Please pay attention to this, otherwise you risk fines at traffic controls, not to mention endangering your health.

In the meantime, many men are switching to women’s bikes, at the latest when their agility starts to weaken. Typical of women’s bikes are the comfortable entrances, which also make stopping and starting much easier. At the same time, many models are visually sporty and therefore also appealing to men. The frame variants with slightly sloping centre bars also make the bike very stable.

A question of type

Dutch bikes

Typical is their Dutch design, which gives you an upright sitting posture. Visually, the so-called Holland arch stands out: this is characterised by a straight down tube with a simply curved top tube. In addition, these bikes are considered particularly robust and of very high quality. You can also look forward to a full chain guard and a rear wheel fairing.

The design with its slotted fork ends is reminiscent of historic city bikes. The mostly leather saddles on Dutch bikes have elaborate suspension, with the handlebars closer to the body than on typical mountain bikes, for example. This guarantees an upright ride that is easy on the joints. The large overtravel, which gives you optimum wheel control and thus above all very safe riding characteristics, results from the greater distance and angle between the wheel and the handlebars. By the way, Dutch bikes are also available as e-bikes and cargo bikes with motor assistance.

Other advantages of a Dutch bike are its stability and low maintenance. And: You can still rely on various technical features today …

Thanks to a flat steering head angle, this bike variant scores with excellent straight-line stability. The position of the handlebars promises a sitting position that relieves the arms and hands.

The Holland bike’s shortcoming:

The gears were neglected from the beginning, after all the bike comes from the Netherlands. On flat terrain, a complex gear system was simply not needed. On some of these bikes built in the Netherlands, only the input hub and coaster brake are available for purchase without an additional hand brake. But in Germany, roadworthy braking systems are compulsory. Exported bikes are therefore usually equipped with coaster brakes, but you can retrofit an optimal combination of drum and coaster brakes without much effort. Please contact us for more information.

The flagship Dutch bicycle has a tyre and rim size of 28 inches. This includes two different sizes of rim diameter: either 622 or 635 millimetres.

Since the rear light is usually only battery-powered, it makes sense to convert it so that both lights (front and rear) can be operated by dynamo and have sufficient luminosity. Here, too, we recommend that you interview your dealer.

By the way, the Hollrand owes its low maintenance partly to its closed chain guard, which is traditionally made of moleskin cotton. In the meantime, however, an ABS plastic is also increasingly being used. Typically, three rubber bands are also used, which are stretched from the wheel hub of the rear wheel over the luggage carrier.

Conclusion: With small and manageable modifications, a Dutch bike can quickly become your comfortable companion for leisurely bike tours and trips through the city.

City bike

As the name suggests, this type of bicycle is a city bike that is optimally designed for your everyday life and also scores points for high riding comfort. This variant is often also called a touring bike. Because of their versatility, city bikes are becoming increasingly popular.

Characteristics of a city bike are its upright riding position. You sit on a padded, sprung saddle and can enjoy sufficient protection from dirt. Thanks to a skirt protector or a coat protector, it is also possible to wear loose clothing and skirts.

The curved, wide handlebars and the associated comfort as well as the practical equipment equip you perfectly for everyday life. Wide tyres give you good grip, and sturdy luggage racks and shopping baskets are part of the basic equipment. Thanks to the low frame tube, it’s easy to get on and off even with a full shopping basket.

Visually, city bikes are very similar to Dutch bikes. They are similarly sturdy and robust and are reminiscent of historical bicycle variants. The modern descendants also have technical refinements and impress above all with their high quality and impressive riding comfort.

However, anyone who suffers from back problems should seek special advice. Although the seating position is generally considered “comfortable”, medical experts complain that the upright seat means that shocks have to be absorbed directly by the spine. If in doubt, we recommend that you talk to your doctor. He or she may then suggest that you go for a trekking bike ..

The trekking bike

The trekking bike is a sporty all-rounder par excellence. It comes fully equipped and is not only suitable for trips through the city, but also for easy off-road riding, for example on tours through forests and on gravel paths.

Trekking bikes are, roughly speaking, modified mountain bikes that promise the rider comfort even on longer distances.

With their diamond frames and full road equipment, you are ready for any city ride and can look forward to mudguards, sturdy luggage racks and a lighting system that fully complies with legal requirements. The individual trekking versions differ from each other in just a few details, such as differences in gears or construction. Here you can make your choice according to your preferences and the size of your budget.

The tyres of your trekking bike are relatively wide and appropriately treaded to ensure good grip in the forest and a safe riding experience.

Of course, you will also find suitable accessories such as panniers for your luggage rack to start your tour perfectly equipped – as well as comprehensive advice from our bike experts.

Lifestyle bikes

Show what you stand for and who you are. A lifestyle bike is a statement of environmental awareness and your attitude to life.

Just by riding to work on a pedelec instead of a car, you’ll be the winner over your inner bastard and show all car drivers that things can be done differently.

Lifestyle bikes are visually and functionally impressive!

With the feeling of freedom in your luggage, you cycle comfortably and with motor support to your destinations. Since the term lifestyle bike is not precisely defined, it includes all bikes that simply make you happy in the city and on tours. The only thing that matters is that, as a pedelec, they have a motor and can get you from A to B very comfortably. In addition, these bikes have to be suitable for everyday use, i.e. they have to be roadworthy, and they have to look different from the run-of-the-mill frames.

The overall focus is on optimised ergonomics that allow you to sit upright and thus protect your arms and hands. Lifestyle bikers also expect appealing colours. Colourful bells and tyres and other accessories connect you to your bike in a special way.

Every lifestyle biker insists on a captivating look and gives less weight to performance. Therefore, these bikes, which are also called urban bikes, come with weaker engines. Those who choose a lifestyle bike want to be seen and are proud of their “rideable” in their favourite colours.
