Which child seat is the right one for me?
The most important cargo we transport is our children. That is why it is all the more important that the little ones can be packed comfortably and safely. A seat that can be easily mounted on the bike and where the children can also enjoy an unobstructed view is ideal.
Tips: What do I need to consider when buying a child seat?
- Easy installation: Quickly attaching and removing the seat makes installation easier.
- Space-saving: In contrast to a bicycle trailer, a child seat saves space and is easier to handle in daily use.
- Size: Child seats are designed for children aged 9 months to 3 years. Front child seats are approved up to 15 kg and rear child seats up to max. 22 kg. The child should be able to sit upright independently and the back of the seat should cover the entire back.
- Open saddle springs must be covered with a saddle spring guard so that the child cannot injure itself.
- Straps on the footrests prevent the feet from getting caught in the spokes.
- Harness straps are better than lap straps and should be relatively difficult or hard for the child to undo.
- A mounted two-legged bicycle stand can prevent the bicycle from tipping over.
- Side bolsters and headrests are recommended for better stability for the child.
What types of mounting are there?
Mounted on the handlebars at the front
For very small children up to 15 kg, the child seat is mounted on the handlebars. You always have your children in view, but they are also exposed to wind and weather. Some child seats therefore have a windscreen. By mounting it on the handlebars, the rider needs a little more practice because the bike loses stability.
Mounted on the seat post at the rear
If the child seat is mounted on the seat tube of the frame, the seat floats above the carrier and acts like a suspension. In addition, the child is protected from the wind and rain. Such a seat is approved for children up to 22 kg. A disadvantage of this type of mounting is the pendulum effect caused by the child’s movements, which can lead to a fall in an emergency.
Mounted on the rear carrier
Mounting on the luggage carrier is probably the most stable and safest option. The seat is firmly attached to the bike and the dangerous pendulum effect is avoided. For many child seats, there are carrier adapters that make it easy to mount or dismount the seat.
