Which bicycle valves are available?
Who hasn’t experienced it – you’re cycling along a country lane and suddenly …
… the tyre is flat. Then you start looking for the problem and, of course, first try to inflate the tyre again. If this is not possible, the tube must be replaced or patched. Here you will find the most common bicycle valves and their applications.
Bicycle valve, Dunlop or Blitz valve
The standard valve on trekking and city bikes as well as on many everyday bikes. You will find it most often in Germany and the Netherlands. It is very easy to replace and can be inflated with any normal air pump. As the maximum air pressure is only 6 bar, it is not suitable for mountain bikes or e-bikes and due to its design you cannot read the tyre pressure on the pump.
Car valve, Schrader valve
This valve is used on cars. You can inflate your bicycle tyre at any petrol station. The maximum pressure is 10 bar. It is mainly used on trekking bikes and mountain bikes. It is sturdily built in, but simple bicycle pumps may not support a car valve. Make sure you have a 3-in-1 or universal pump in your luggage, so you are prepared for all eventualities.
French valve, Sclaverand or Presta valve
Road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes often use this valve. It can be loaded with up to 15 bar and the air pressure can be read off a floor pump. This is an important factor for road bikes, as they require a high air pressure. It is narrowly built (6.5 mm) and has a high rim stability. You have to be a little more careful with the valve as it can bend quickly. To inflate it, the valve head must first be turned counterclockwise and then closed again.
