Triathletes ride to two European Championship titles on CUBE bikes

Lucy Charles-Barclay won the Ironman 70.3 Elsinore and was crowned Ironman 70.3 European Champion. Frederic Funk also secured the title at the ETU European Middle Distance Championship as part of Challenge Walchsee.

In Elsinore, Denmark, Lucy Charles-Barclay lived up to her role as favourite and impressively won the gold medal at the Ironman 70.3 European Championships with course records in all three disciplines. Already in the first discipline, the strong swimmer had set a new swim course record and a lead of almost one minute. Also on the 90 bike kilometres, the 27-year-old set the bike course record from 2018 on her CUBE Aerium with an average speed of 40.9 km/h. With a three-minute lead, she switched to the subsequent run and ran unhindered towards her victory over the 21.1 kilometres. With a superior start-finish victory, the Briton secured the title and set a new course record with a time under the magic four-hour mark for female triathletes (3:59:57 hours). This makes her one of the top contenders for victory at the legendary Ironman World Championship in Hawaii next October.

Despite his young age, 23-year-old Frederic Funk is one of the best middle-distance cyclists and has been riding CUBE bikes for three years. At the weekend, the Munich native won his first international title at the European Triathlon Union’s European Middle Distance Championships over a 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21.1km run, celebrating his greatest success to date. After the swim, he was still just behind the leader, but after the first few kilometres on the bike he was already in the lead and dominated the profiled bike course. With a good run performance, he pulled away from his competitors and crossed the finish line as the newly crowned European champion after 3:36:56 hours.
