To work by bike
Some couldn’t imagine anything else, others would like to, and still others, blaspheme. No one can seem to please anyone. But one thing is certain: cycling is good for the environment and keeps your body fit. If you cycle to work in winter, you will also get a few surprised looks. In cities it is common to cycle one way or another, but only about one in ten people in Germany cycle to work.
Those who live in rural areas and have to travel a few kilometres to work probably think twice about cycling or getting into a heated car.
In the meantime, more and more cycle paths are being expanded especially because e-bikes are becoming more popular. The federal government is therefore supporting the expansion of cycling infrastructure with 1.4 billion euros between 2020 and 2023 and improving cycling in Germany.
The advantages at a glance:
- Faster to your destination: in the city, you are between 5 and 10 km faster than other road users. There is usually no need to search for a parking space and you can park right outside your front door. There is room for about 12 bicycles in one car parking space. Especially in big cities, many parking spaces could be saved or converted.
- Cycling improves blood circulation and the cardiovascular system. It also has a mood-lifting and refreshing effect.
- Cyclists protect the environment and reduce CO2 emissions
- In contrast to car drivers, cyclists save money. Just 2 x 10 km commute and about 20 days, you save about 3500 euros a year.
- Set an example. Not only wearing a helmet and respecting the traffic regulations are important, but also having fun and protecting our environment are values that are worth passing on to our younger generations.
- A combination of cycling and a bus or train ride, could be an option for some. If you live further away from your workplace, you can usually take your bike with you on local and long-distance public transport at a reasonable price. It’s best to find out beforehand and make a reservation if necessary.
The disadvantages at a glance:
- In summer, cycling to work can be a sweaty affair. Therefore, good preparation is important. Choose the right clothes, preferably using the onion system. Some employers even offer the possibility to take a shower and refresh yourself at the workplace. You may be able to pack a natural deodorant, just in case.
- Secure storage is very important, as is a good bike lock. Make sure that you can securely protect your bike from theft at your workplace.
- If you live a tight schedule, e.g. you have to pick up your children from kindergarten or take grandma to the doctor, you will quickly reach the limits of what is possible. With a car you are certainly more flexible, even if you want to go shopping quickly during your lunch break or take your colleagues to lunch.
4 practical tips for commuting by bicycle
- To reduce perspiration, it is better to use bicycle bags to carry luggage. A backpack encourages sweating on your back and makes you less agile.
- A good bike lock, which should be about 10% of the bike’s value, protects against theft.
- A well-planned route and good time management are recommended. It is better to start a little earlier to be able to cycle in a relaxed manner.
- Check the bike briefly before setting off. Is the air pressure correct? Are the batteries charged?
