Quinten Hermans takes his first World Cup success
Yesterday, Wednesday, the Tormans Cyclo Cross Team was at the start of the second race of the Cyclocross World Cup. Marie Schreiber was the first to take on the demanding course in the women’s elite category. The 18-year-old from Luxembourg finished the race in 24th place, 2:26 after world champion Lucinda Brand. The male delegation, consisting of Quinten Hermans, Kevin Kuhn, Thomas Mein, Corné van Kessel and Emiel Verstrynge, started 1h30 later.
Three days after an excellent competition in Waterloo, Quinten Hermans managed another solid start, taking the lead in the first lap together with Toon Aerts. Hermans used a long climb to launch an attack in the third lap and distanced Aerts, Iserbyt and Vanthourenhout.
Quinten Hermans dominated the particularly demanding and muddy course, which will also host the World Championships in January, and extended his lead to 48 seconds in the sixth and penultimate lap. He avoided risks in the last lap and finished the race in 55 minutes and 37 seconds ahead of the first chaser, European champion Eli Iserbyt.
Hermans thus gives the Tormans Cyclo Cross Team not only its first World Cup victory, but also its first personal World Cup success in the elite category. Young Emiel Verstrynge also rode an impressive race and finished 10th, while the team’s other riders finished in the top 20: Thomas Mein 13th, Corné Van Kessel 16th and Kevin Kuhn 19th. Thanks to his win and his 3rd place in Waterloo, Hermans is now in 2nd place in the preliminary individual World Cup standings.
“This victory feels so good! I was very motivated to prepare this cyclocross winter because last year a crash at the Critérium du Dauphiné ruined the start of my 2020-2021 season. This year I set these first World Cups as my first big goals for the season. That’s why I’m glad it worked out! I really appreciate this moment, especially after a difficult year. Already in the second lap, when Toon Aerts accelerated, I felt that I was strong today. I was the only one who could follow him on the climb and who still had something left. That’s why I decided to attack there in the following lap. The result was a solo of 40 minutes and a first World Cup win!”
