Lucy Charles-Barclay takes her first Ironman 70.3 World Championship title in St. George
The 28-year-old British Lucy Charles-Barclay secured victory at the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in St George, USA, with an impressive performance.
As you would expect from Charles-Barclay, she immediately took the lead of the top-class field after the start and was quickly able to put several hundred metres of distance between herself and her pursuers. After a little more than 24 minutes, the Brit got out of the water and already had a lead of almost one and a half minutes.
Also on the bike course, which Lucy Charles-Barclay tackled with her Aerium C:68, she left no doubt that she wanted to take the victory. With the fastest bike time of the day (2:14:59), Lucy Charles-Barclay extended her lead to almost 5 minutes over second-placed Taylor Knibb (silver medallist in Tokyo) and more than 6 minutes over multiple Ironman and Ironman 70.3 world champion Daniela Ryf.
For the final half marathon, the Briton needed 1:18:48 and thus proved her new-found running strength. After 4:00:20, Charles-Barclay crossed the finish line with a lead of more than 8 minutes over second-placed Jeanni Metzler and third-placed Taylor Knibb and was thus able to celebrate her first world championship after several second places.
