Lost the key from the bike lock or e-bike – What to do?
The key for the lock or for the battery on the e-bike is gone. If the lock is of a high quality, it can be very difficult to break it open. Especially if the bike has been tied up somewhere in public. Regardless of the financial damage caused by breaking the lock, it is very annoying. For this reason, you should make a note of or photograph the serial number or key number before or after buying the bike
The serial number can usually be used to obtain a newer key from the manufacturer. It is also advantageous to have proof of purchase or an invoice to prove that you are the owner of the bike. Abus always supplies a code card with a new lock or e-bike. A key can also be reordered with this code card. However, this only applies to the Plus & XPlus locks. Most e-bike keys are made by Abus or AXA. Click here to go directly to the key service:
Forced opening as a last resort
If no key number or code is available, the only solution is to break it open. The easiest way to do this is with an angle grinder or bolt cutter. Here, too, it is important to carry proof of ownership, especially if it happens in public.
What to do if the key is broken off?
If part of the key is still in the lock, you can try to drill out the lock or try to pull out the end of the key with pliers. With graphite spray you can try to make the lock run more smoothly and with a jigsaw blade you can try to get the broken piece out.
