Is a chain guard useful?
Nothing works on a bicycle without a chain. That’s why this component in particular should be serviced every 200 km. In addition, a well-maintained chain also protects all other components such as the sprockets. To protect the chain and clothing from unnecessary dirt, you can fit a chain guard.
There are many different types on the market:
Chainrunner
Chain runners are used exclusively on bicycles with hub gears. A half-open protective tube is pulled directly onto the chain and thus mainly protects the clothing.
Chain guard
On mountain bikes, chain protection discs are installed to protect the chainring. The disc protects the clothing from chain grease and the disc from dirt accumulation.
Partial chain guard
A partial chain guard covers the upper part of the chain as well as the chainring. It can be fitted to bicycles with hub gears and derailleur gears. A disadvantage is that the lower part of the chain is not protected.
Full chain guard
An all-round protection for your chain and your clothes. Mostly found on Dutch bicycles and only on bicycles with hub gears. The disadvantage is the complicated assembly.
