Project Y – How Focus sees the future of e-road bikes

Focus has just presented the “Project Y” to the public. E-racing bikes and e-mountain bikes that weigh less than 13 kilos and don’t look like they have a motor or battery. The e-racing bikes weigh 12 kg and have a 400 watt motor that is switched on when you need it most: On a hill, during an intermediate sprint or when your legs just won’t take it anymore.

Focus describes it as follows: “[…]the PROJECT Y offers the same ride characteristics as a standard racing bike“. In other words, it should behave like a normal racing bike when the motor is not switched on. As soon as the weight plays a role, for example when riding uphill, the motor comes into play. So you won’t ride a complete tour with the motor switched on. It doesn’t make much sense either, because as with all pedelecs, the support switches off at 25 km/h. And since you’re also a hobby cyclist, you’ll have to ride with the motor on. And since even as a hobby racing cyclist you normally ride faster than 25 km/h, the motor is only useful for acceleration, for example after bends or when starting off.
Which motor will be used and what the e-fun will cost us is still open. We will keep you informed.
